It's ugly. It's prickly. It's charged. Really, is there any term in the English language—in any language, for that matter— that's more loaded?
Those issues acquire layers—just one layer after another. It's a dynamic relationship that you have with your body when you do gain weight and you lose it and maybe you gain it again and then you lose it—it's a very changeable perspective that you have. That's what got me really wanting to write a book—there was so much there and it all depended on how I was feeling about my body on any given day.
I felt like there was so much there that there was no way I would be able to tackle it in just one story. That's why I came up with the idea of I just really wanted to hit upon all the ways that body image stuff kind of rears its head. How you might hang out with a friend, how you might interact with your parents, how you might look at a piece of clothing—all of those things are constantly changing depending on how you're seeing yourself. I've had that experience watching America's Next Top Model.
I've had that experience watching a lot of TV shows. They're presenting different body types that weren't as visible when I was growing up—that kind of variation. I don't really know—because that can be fraught, too. Just because of what you're saying—how you view someone on television has everything to do with how you're seeing yourself, too.
But she's having to reckon with creating an image of herself—and she's in so much control of that image, and in a lot of more control of that image than we are now with social media when we can get tagged and stuff like that.
It's a completely different world, but I still think that the struggle with the ownership over the way that you're seen is something that I was interested in exploring with Lizzie.
B ecause even when she does take a photo or have a photo taken of herself for her Internet lover, it doesn't pan out. It can't pan out. She can't control that even though she really wants to. Oh, god! I can't even imagine. I've never been on it, but I'd imagine but it's somewhat cathartic to be able to swipe someone's face. That must feel on certain days really good to do. Like a video game where you get to kill people.
But it does seem to kind of erase so fast, and then it's all based on one image. That's really scary to me. I think it's definitely double-sided. That's the other side of the coin, isn't it? That's something that this character struggles with, too.
I just did it myself; I think women try to pin each other down. It's not the prettiest side of female interaction that we do that, but I think body image and our issues with that definitely do shape our friendships—not always in a bad way, but sometimes in a way that can be distracting, and that's definitely something that the book explores.
There are days when I think the word "curvy" sounds nice. There are days when I'm super-annoyed by it and I think it's a euphemism for something and I just wish people would say "fat. That's a really, really, really good question. It depends on the day, you know? That's the case for a lot of other words that we use sometimes.
What does that even mean? That's why it was so important for me to put that word "fat" right on the cover of the book. That's a really charged word—but even though it feels like this stamp that puts you in this box like you said about curvy, I don't think it does. I think there's a lot of relativity and subjectivity in that.
Women who run the gamut in terms of size would use that word on a certain day to describe themselves. It's a weird thing. I read a really great piece about when women who are a size 2 use language to describe themselves as "fat" do a real disservice to people who are actually fat, and who actually have been marginalized as a result of their size—who actually can't shop in regular stores becaus e of their size.
There's some real truth in that. It's always this double-sided coin, which is why writing the book was such a challenge, and tackling this issue was so challenging, because I don't think that it's invalid necessarily that if those women who are so small in my eyes are feeling fat, there's a problem with that also.
It's a strange beast. In the book, it was really important for me not to make Lizzie's issues about her body bound up in any one gaze or any one person—that it was all outside of that. All of it was kind of contributing, but not any single one was responsible. Not a single man, not a single woman, not her mother. I think that's what's so tricky about it. We internalize it and it becomes our own weird monster that we have to reckon with.
It's a self-fulfilling prophecy, so the answer is that I'm not quite sure. The reason why I wrote the book is that I was trying to unpack it, but in the end, I sort of saw it as too many sided to really tie down to any one thing. Just how much energy is spent on that, and how that's life. That's minutes, and hours, and days and years of life used up obsessing and being distracted. That's a real loss. The book does examine that. The more she transforms and the more she becomes in her mind "slender," the more of her life becomes dedicated to the maintenance of that and the preoccupation with that to the exclusion of other things.
I really zoomed in very closely on that aspect of her interiority because I wanted to show that. I wanted to show how much life gets used up in that.
Oh man! I'll say this: I can't take one. I don't know how to do it. I wish I did in some ways because I think that would be very freeing. You can edit before anyone sees it. I think that's kind of lovely. Because there's really something quite menacing about the camera. I want to learn how to love the selfie. I think it would be empowering.
